New Delhi, 22nd February, 2016 : Giving a positive boost to the presently paralyzed para movement in India, a group of all the stakeholders of para fraternity including Para federations, Para organisations and the civil societies came together to form a structured umbrella – Indian Association of Para Sport Organisations (IAPSO), emphasizing on accessibility, autonomy, doping, classification and transparency. This new para body, formed here today, will soon submit its report to the Government of India as well as International Bodies.

“A joint forum of the stakeholders of para sports had a two days exhaustive brain storming session towards Para Sport for development towards 2020 & beyond. Our key focus was to design a strategy for transforming para sports from disability sports into a sports organization which will empower the para athletes not only in the field of sports but also in education, health, training and employment,” said Rajesh Tomar, the newly elected Chairman of IAPSO.

Apart from 12 federations previously affiliated with the suspended Paralympic Committee of India, total 18 such federations and NGO’s like Samarthanam Trust For the Disabled, Shree Bharatiya Pragna Chakshu Gurukul, Viklang Vishwas Foundation, Samprat Educational & Charitable Trust, Real Human, Disabled Youth Foundation, Shree Unique Viklang Charitable Trust, Shishu Sarothi and Cerebral Palsy Sports Association of India will also be a part of this new body.

“It’s a privilege and pride for all para sport federations and organisations of India who have taken unique initiative as a challenge to raise the platform of para sport in India to enhance the potentiality and capabilities of para athletes in India. We will give full support to IAPSO and join hand to hand for all round development of Para athletes in India,” said Mr. Mahantesh G.K., the Managing Trustee of Samarthanam Trust and Chief Convener of IAPSO.

Along with Veteran Para athlete Mr. Shankar Iyer, Dr. Rajesh Lamechwal, Arjun Awardee Mr. Ramesh Tika Ram, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility and leadership, Mr. Tomar said that para sport is not the sole property of any one organization and now the time has come to involve all the stakeholders, including Government, and design the programmes for all round development of para sport persons specially women and children.

“Sport should not be treated in isolation. All the efforts should be made for human development of the specially abled persons (Divyang) and this can be done through professional approach and clear vision. There is a need to establish a larger pool of technical officials, classifiers, anti-doping experts, sports event organisers and media,” said Mr. Tomar who is also the Vice President of Asian Paralympic Committee.

New conveners of IAPSO would be: Mr. Ravi Kondiah, Mr. Bharat Thakkar, Mr. S. Sridhar, Mr. Prasanta Karmakar, Mr. Suriender Pahil, Mr. Pradeep Raj, Neeraj Pandita and Mr. R. K. Sharma.
